Artist Fuses Traditional Art with 3D Printing

Artist Tian Tian, Director of Digital Media Art Design at Aurora College, Shanghai, has exploited Polymaker’s brand new solution to surface finish in 3D prints. With the release of Polymaker’s PolySmooth and the desktop Polysher,  Tian Tian can create a perfectly smooth glossy surface to achieve the high level of detail required to paint traditional Qing Dynasty vases.

When Tian Tian is not busy at Aurora college she likes to keep up the age old tradition of Qing vase painting in her spare time. This ancient art dates back to the 13th century and depends highly on skilled artists with very fine brush movements. To make sure all the fine detail is captured the artists need a very smooth surface to paint on as not to disrupt their brush strokes.

Polymaker’s new filament, a PVB (Polyvinyl Butyral) is soluble in I.P.A (Isopropanol). Inside the Polysher’s chamber a fine mist of I.P.A is created by an ultrasonic nebulizer, this mist engulfs the PolySmooth model melting the surface and blending the layers together. When the vase is removed from the Polysher you are left with a clean glossy layer less surface, opening many doors previously closed to 3D printed objects.
